The Galpin GTR1 looks cool, but am I the only one not into supercars built on top of supercars?
Last year in Pebble Beach, Galpin Auto Sports (famous for customized Fords) brought their Ford GTR1 concept to the prestigious concept lawn.
Based on the 2004-2006 Ford GT, the GTR1 features a 1058hp supercharged V8, and completely customized coachwork. Though the car looks cool, (especially the rear end) am I the only one not into a supercar being built on top of another supercar?
I'm all for adding a little power or changing the look slightly, but is entirely re-working an already iconic car kind of missing the point? Sports cars like the Corvette and Mustang have re-bodied performance versions come out all the time, but this is the relatively low-volume Ford GT we're talking about, a car that is already enjoying cult like status with prices having already risen sharply.
Is a car like the GTR1 kind of like buying a Countach and saying "this is a great car, but what it really needs is the scissor doors removed and made into a convertible. Possibly a limo too because I'm crazy."? (luckily just a replica.)
In the end, Galpin is stating that they'll only build 6 examples of the GTR1 for public consumption, so a minimum amount of GT's will need to be frankenstiened. Their design at least keeps in the spirit of the GT, and that rear-end looks so damn good I hope if there is ever another Ford GT, that it will feature tail-lights with a similar look.
