Poorly Written Book Reviews: What Did Jesus Drive?
This is one of the craziest books I have ever read. And no, it's not crazy about Jesus. Well maybe a little, but not really. (I believe it's named that way so that people will look at you oddly on the subway as you read it.)
In reality, this book is about the career of Jason H. Vines. A PR professional who worked in the auto industry. If you're looking for a tell all book about the industry, (and you've already read 'Car Guys vs Bean Counters' by Bob Lutz) then this is the book for you. Sure, it's all told from Jason's perspective, but that doesn't make it any less interesting. It makes it more interesting, because Jason spills the beans on everybody.
When you think of a PR person, 'liar' may be the first word that comes to mind, but Jason preaches a non-lying approach, and shows the reader how he managed to maintain that non-pinnochio stance throughout many automotive crises. From the Firestone/Ford crisis, to GM's current ignition switch debacle, Jason has been through all of it, and Jason lays it all out. Who he liked, and who he didn't like, and how he once told a CEO of a major automotive company that his self-prepared speech would make him look like a dickhead. And there's also a chapter about how he briefly ended up working for a bible publisher named Zondervan.
If you love the car industry, and I mean love it, you should buy this book. If you work in anything resembling PR, you should buy this book. If you think former Chrysler CEO Bob Nardelli is the best CEO ever, you should probably not buy this book.
